Privacy Policy
Last updated: March 23, 2026
PocoZukan ("the App") is a free, open-source Japanese language study app. Your privacy is important to us. This policy explains what data the App collects, how it is stored, and your rights.
Data We Collect
The App stores the following data locally on your device only:
- Study progress — SRS stages, review history, accuracy statistics, and session timestamps for each vocabulary item you study.
- WaniKani API token — If you choose to import WaniKani data, your API v2 token is stored on-device to authenticate with the WaniKani API. This is optional and user-initiated.
- WaniKani username — Displayed in the Settings screen after a successful connection.
- Vocabulary data — Japanese characters, meanings, readings, and mnemonics for study items (both bundled Pokopia content and imported WaniKani content).
Data We Do NOT Collect
- We do not collect personal information (name, email, phone number, location).
- We do not use analytics, tracking, or advertising SDKs.
- We do not send any data to our servers — the App has no backend server.
- We do not use cookies or similar tracking technologies.
- We do not create user accounts.
Third-Party Services
The App connects to two external services, only when you initiate the action:
- WaniKani API (wanikani.com) — When you choose to import your WaniKani data, the App sends your API token to the WaniKani API over HTTPS to fetch your subjects and assignments. This is a one-time import; the App does not sync continuously. WaniKani's privacy policy applies to data stored on their servers.
- Jisho API (jisho.org) — When you search for vocabulary definitions, the App sends the search query (a Japanese word) to Jisho's public API over HTTPS. No personal data is transmitted.
Data Storage & Security
All data is stored locally on your device in a SQLite database. Sensitive credentials (such as your WaniKani API token) are stored using the device's secure storage (Keychain on iOS). The App does not transmit your data to any server we operate.
Data Export & Deletion
- Export — You can export all your study data as a JSON file via Settings → Export All Data.
- Deletion — Uninstalling the App removes all locally stored data, including your study progress and any saved API tokens. You can also clear your WaniKani connection from the Settings screen at any time.
Children's Privacy
The App does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. The App is an educational tool suitable for all ages and does not require account creation or personal data entry.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
